Athenry’s historic north gate in 1860 The town’s North Gate is one of five entrance gates built in the early 1300’s as part of the the town walls. It is the only one that survives today and known locally as ‘The Arch’. A two storey rectangular structure with a slightly splayed base, it has been fully restored. The town walls are among the best preserved in the country with over 70% surviving. They enclose an area of 28.5 hectares making Athenry one of the largest medieval towns in Ireland.

At Galway docks the sacks of potatoes were unloaded from the lorry and brought to the boats by dockers. This had to be finished by five o’clock so the lorry driver had to be on time and would usually bring a load of timber on the return journey to Athenry. Fire destroyed the premises on the 17th December 1987 and a decision was made not the re-build with staff given the option to transfer and work in Galway or take redundancy. corbett’s of northgate street
